Passport Restrictions

passport restrictions

Recently, the IRS resumed placing restrictions on passports for taxpayers who owe delinquent taxes in excess of $50,000. Though the IRS sends notifications to taxpayers who are subject to the restriction, many taxpayers discover the restriction very close to the time of international travel. To have a passport restriction removed and then have proper notice sent by the IRS to the Department of Homeland Security, a taxpayer will need to be current on the filing of any missing tax returns and also be placed on an installment arrangement or not collectible status for any delinquent taxes due. While the regulations indicate that the restriction on a passport should be reversed within 30 days of compliance, oftentimes it may take up to 60 days to get the restriction released.
