Segal, Cohen & Landis

Segal, Cohen & Landis, P.C.

Nevada IRS Tax Attorney

Serving Nevada from our Beverly Hills office. Most matters are handled entirely by phone and video.

Nevada has no personal income tax, so for individuals the IRS is the only income-tax authority in the state, and for the many Nevadans who moved from California, the Franchise Tax Board is the second. In Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, and Carson City, gaming and hospitality tips, professional gambling, short-term rentals, and contractor income draw federal audits, liens, and levies, while California residency audits follow relocations for years. Segal, Cohen & Landis represents Nevada clients before the IRS, IRS Appeals, and the U.S. Tax Court from our Beverly Hills office, and defends FTB residency audits on the firm's home ground.

NV Tax Landscape

Nevada has no personal income tax on wages, capital gains, retirement distributions, or gambling winnings, which is why tens of thousands of Californians move to Las Vegas and Reno every year. The Nevada Department of Taxation administers business-side taxes instead: the Commerce Tax on companies with more than $4 million in Nevada gross revenue, the Modified Business Tax on payroll, and sales and use tax, all enforced independently of the IRS. For individuals, that leaves the IRS as the only income-tax authority in the state, and federal enforcement in Nevada is shaped by two things. The first is the California Franchise Tax Board. Moving to Nevada and ending a California tax obligation are not the same thing; the FTB audits former residents who claim a Nevada move while keeping California income, property, or family ties, and it demands bank records, cell-phone location data, and utility bills to prove where a taxpayer actually lived. A sloppy move can leave someone owing California's top 13.3% rate on income they believed was tax-free. The second is Nevada's own economy. Gaming and hospitality workers on the Strip, in downtown Las Vegas, and in Reno generate substantial tip and cash income, and the IRS enforces tip reporting, Form 8027, and the industry's tip-compliance agreements closely. Professional gamblers and high-volume players draw scrutiny over W-2G reporting, session accounting, and loss deductions. The short-term-rental boom, a large base of self-employed contractors and entertainers, and the Reno-Sparks technology and logistics corridor produce Schedule C, 1099-matching, and employment-tax examinations, including Trust Fund Recovery Penalty assessments against business owners. Segal, Cohen & Landis represents Nevada clients before the IRS, IRS Appeals, and the U.S. Tax Court from Beverly Hills, and for Nevada's many ex-Californians the firm's home base is an advantage: SCL contends with the FTB on its own turf every day and knows how to defend a legitimate Nevada residency before a routine move becomes a six-figure assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions — Nevada IRS Tax Help

I moved from California to Nevada. Can California still tax me?

Yes, if the Franchise Tax Board decides your move was incomplete or that you still have California-source income. The FTB audits former residents for years after a relocation and applies its own residency and domicile tests. SCL works against the FTB daily and defends genuine Nevada residency claims before they become large assessments.

Does Nevada tax my income?

Nevada has no personal income tax. Nevada's Department of Taxation collects business taxes such as the Commerce Tax, the Modified Business Tax on payroll, and sales and use tax. Your federal income tax obligations to the IRS are unaffected, and the IRS is the agency that audits, liens, and levies Nevada individuals.

How does the IRS treat tips and gambling income in Nevada?

Tips are fully taxable wages and the IRS enforces reporting through employer programs and matching. Gambling winnings are taxable and reported on Form W-2G above thresholds; losses are deductible only to the extent of winnings and only with contemporaneous records. Professional gamblers face additional scrutiny on trade-or-business status. SCL represents hospitality workers, gamblers, and businesses in these examinations.

Which Nevada cities do you serve?

All of them. We have local IRS and court context for Las Vegas, Reno, and Carson City, and we represent clients in Henderson, North Las Vegas, Sparks, and across the state.

How quickly can you stop a wage garnishment or bank levy?

In most cases, we can issue an IRS levy release or garnishment suspension within 24–72 hours of being retained, pending IRS processing. The first step is a free consultation to assess your situation.

What is the cost of a tax attorney consultation?

We offer a free initial consultation to evaluate your situation. Fee schedules vary by case type and complexity — we are transparent about fees before any engagement.
