Historical overview: the 2025 filing season. Direct File offered eligible taxpayers in participating states a way to prepare and file 2024 federal returns directly with the IRS. This article describes that historical service, not a current invitation to use it.
What Is IRS Direct File?
Direct File was an IRS-operated federal return preparation and filing service. It was distinct from IRS Free File, which uses participating commercial providers. Treasury announced expansion plans in May 2024; the IRS’s February 2025 outreach guide described the service available during that filing season.
Key Benefits of IRS Direct File
In 2025, the IRS described a question-based filing process, mobile-device support, English and Spanish interfaces, and live-chat assistance. These features helped users prepare a return; they did not guarantee accuracy or support every tax situation.
Addressing a Critical Need
The service provided a no-cost federal filing option for eligible users. The IRS guide limited eligibility by participating state, income type, credits and deductions. Business, rental and gig-economy income and itemized deductions were outside its listed supported situations.
Why This Matters for You
Historical availability does not establish eligibility for a later filing season. Review current filing options and the requirements for your return before choosing a service.
Rollout Timeline
The 2024 pilot preceded expansion to eligible taxpayers in 25 states during the 2025 filing season. This was not nationwide availability for every taxpayer. State returns were handled through participating state tools rather than prepared by the federal service itself.
Expert Insights
The IRS’s dated outreach guide is the primary reference for the 2025 features and eligibility described here. Historical announcements should be read in their original filing-season context.
Preparing for 2025
For that filing season, eligible users needed their tax records, verified account access and a review of the completed return. Retain filed returns and supporting records even when an online filing service changes.
A Simpler Future for Tax Filing
Status checked October 1, 2026: California FTB’s official report states that Direct File had been discontinued as of January 1, 2026, and New York’s tax department also confirms discontinuation. The old expansion announcements are not evidence of present availability. Consult current IRS and state filing guidance for other options.
